regclosekey (advapi32)
Last changed: -89.41.26.54

.
Summary
Releases a handle to the specified registry key

C# Signature:

[DllImport("advapi32.dll", SetLastError=true)]
public static extern int RegCloseKey(IntPtr hKey);

VB Signature:

Declare Function RegCloseKey Lib "advapi32.dll" (ByVal hKey As IntPtr) As Integer

User-Defined Types:

None.

Notes:

In my VB.Net project I used the Integer data type instead of IntPtr and I can confirm it works great. My alternative declaration is posted below:

    Public Declare Function RegCloseKey Lib "advapi32.dll" (ByVal hKey As Integer) _
    As Integer

Note that Integer is 32 bit, so you may have issues if you use Integer instead of IntPtr on a 64 bit platform.

Tips & Tricks:

Please add some!

Sample Code:

The following is VB.Net sample code:

    Dim hkeyKeytoOpen As Integer
    Dim ErrororResultValue1 As Integer = RegOpenKeyEx(inthKey, strlpSubKey, 0, KEY_ALL_ACCESS, hkeyKeytoOpen)

    RegSetValueEx(hkeyKeytoOpen, strlpValueName, 0, REG_SZ, strValueData, strValueData.Length)
    RegDeleteValue(hkeyKeytoOpen, strlpValueName)
    RegCloseKey(hkeyKeytoOpen)

This page has been modified to combine well with the other pinvoke.net signatures for Registry functions.

Alternative Managed API:

Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.Close() Method.

(Special Note: The .NET Framework (3.0 and earlier at least) cannot read registry values of special types (for example: REG_RESOURCE_LIST and REG_FULL_RESOURCE_DESCRIPTOR). I am not sure if they will ever be available under .NET, to see examples of these types of values at work, visit your registry under (HKLM\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System) and (HKLM\HARDWARE\RESOURCEMAP\Hardware Abstraction Layer\ACPI x86 platform).
